ethical governance & learning
in technology and engineering

egalite (ethical governance and learning in technology and engineering) is an interdisciplinary research group at the Colorado School of Mines. We primarily conduct research in the fields of engineering ethics, engineering education, and the ethics of technology. Our members, collaborators, and affiliates are from diverse backgrounds including philosophy, engineering education, STS, anthropology, science and technology policy, and computer science.

Particularly, we are interested in the following topics:

  • the cultural foundations of engineering ethics (e.g., how values, ideologies, assumptions, and biases are communicated in both formal and informal engineering education settings, how to incorporate less prominent Western and non-Western cultural resources into engineering ethics education);

  • global, comparative, and international engineering education (e.g., comparing engineering practices, professional education, and educational policy-making across cultures, assessing global competencies for students and professionals in engineering to work effectively across cultures);

  • ethics and policy of emerging technologies (e.g., ethical issues arising from the employment of emerging technologies such as robotics and crowdsourcing technologies in work, education, and society; how to incorporate ethical sensitivity and imagination into the design of responsible AI technologies and the education of future professionals).
